Windshield Survey NUR/405 December 3, 2012 Pamela Smith Abstract Windshield Survey A community is a group of people who live in the same area, interact with each other, and share certain norms and values. A community is defined as a locality-based entity, composed of systems of formal organizations reflecting societal institutions, informal groups, and aggregates that are interdependent and whose function or expressed intent is to meet a wide variety of collective needs (Stanhope amp; Lancaster, 2012). Community health is the process or characteristics that allow a community’s population and economy to survive. Community health is defined as the meeting of collective needs through identification of problems and†¦show more content†¦The yards are kept and I see an elderly couple outside doing yard work and raking leaves. I observe one neighbor hanging Christmas lights from the roof. The neighborhood has a mix of ethnicity. I see Hispanic, Caucasian and African populations. This family is Lutheran and attends a church a few blocks away. There i s also a nearby Catholic church. The local hospital is about 1 mile away and I passed it on my way to their home. There are many doctors offices and dental offices near the hospital. Many yards still have election signs still in the yards. There are not any billboards visible displaying any media. I do see some newspapers in driveways. This neighborhood has close access to the highway. The city of Chicago is about a forty five minute drive. The father says he takes the train to commute to the city for work in the city. He is a machine operator for a manufacturing plant in the city. This neighborhood is very culturally diverse and has a wide range of ages. There are both young and older families living in their neighborhood. Some aspects of the community that could affect residents health are air pollution, aging populations, and noise disturbances. According to Health People 2020 leading health indicator for this population is environmental hazards. Some populations are disproportionately exposed to environmental hazards. As a result, health disparities exist.
