Global Warming When one starts a car or burns wood, the last thought on their mind is the consequences to these actions. Unfortunately, the daily dangers to earth are not widely known. Due to the constant change of society, this planet must cope with various problems. One of the most important ecological structures is the ozone layer. The same shield that protects us from the suns deadly radiation, can also act as a blanket engulfing us in heat. This situation is know as the greenhouse effect. Greenhouse gases cause global warming. What causes the greenhouse effect and what can be done to reduce global warming? The problem of global warming has been around for some time now. In fact, without the greenhouse effect, the average surface temperature of the earth would be about 59 Fahrenheit degrees lower than it is today. Long before civilization intervened , the thin blanket of gases that surround the earth was efficiently trapping a tiny portion of the sun?s heat and keeping it near the surface to warm up the air just enough to prevent temperatures from plunging to frigid extremes every night- which, of course, is exactly what happens on the moon and on planets like Mars that have very thin atmospheres (Gore, 1992). The greenhouse effect received its name because the atmosphere of the earth acts much like the glass roof on a greenhouse. Sunlight enters the greenhouse through the glass as it heats up the plants. Then, the warmth is trapped as the glass slows the withdraw of heat. Similarly, the earth?s atmosphere lets most of the sun?s light enter and heat the surface. The earth then sends this energy, called Infrared Radiation, back into the atmosphere (showed in the diagram on page 7). This is when the actual effect takes place. The highly controversial, and much disputed issues surrounding the Keystone XL crude oil pipeline project. There are many pros and cons of the Keystone XL pipeline. It would make more sense to approve it and build it rather than sit and wait. We need to get away from importing Middle East oil and start producing more on our own soil. The Keystone pipeline would transport a crude oil alternative from Canada to the United States in Houston, Texas. The pipeline has rapidly gained exposure, this exposure can be attributed to a number of factors, but in a large part rising gasoline prices and political pressures are the driving factors. Increased demand for more reliable and stable supplies of crude oil in the United States has been driven by traditional heavy oil. TransCanada Corporation is a Canadian based energy company which develops and operates energy infrastructure throughout North America. The corporation is at the center of the oil sands debate. Since the pipeline would cross international borders, the project requires the approval of the State Department in accordance with executive order 13337. Oil sands are naturally occurring deposits of mixtures of water, bitumen, sand, clay, and other minerals. All of which combine to create extremely viscous oil. The sand particles have become coated with a thick layer of oil and water. After millions of years of exposure to bacteria, the mixture becomes incredibly thick. The crude must be treated prior to processing in order to produce usable fuels, such as gasoline and diesel fuel. The World Energy Council reported that there are 598 natural bitumen deposits in 23 countries, with the largest deposits in Canada, Kazakhstan, and Russia. The global natural bitumen reserve is estimated to be 249 billion barrels; 176 billion of those are in Canada. Oil sands were first discovered in the 1700’s but were unable to be extracted. (keystone-xl) Many Republicans argue for the immediate approval of the project. Here are the facts; the entire project is estimated to cost $5. 3 billion dollars. It is the largest infrastructure project currently proposed in the US. The project would be 1,179 miles long and would need an estimated 9,000 American workers. That means they need welders, mechanics, electricians, pipefitters, laborer, safety coordinators, heavy equipment operators and other workers who rely on large construction projects to keep employed. To meet the demand of all the supplies needed it is also estimated that 7,000 jobs in manufacturing the steel pipe and thousands of fittings, valves, and pumps and control devices are required for the major oil pipeline. TransCanada has contracts all over the U. S, companies in Texas, Missouri, Pennsylvania, Michigan, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Indiana, Georgia, Maryland, New York, Louisiana, Minnesota, Ohio, Arkansas, and California. TransCanada already has 4,000 American workers in Oklahoma and Texas building a Gulf Coast Pipeline Project. The gulf coast pipeline project is expected to be completed by the end of this year. Construction and development is anticipated to generate $20 billion in economic impact in the U. S, including $99 million in local government revenues and $486 million in state government revenues during construction, plus an additional $5 billion in property taxes. (keystone-xl) Right now there is no pipeline from Alberta, Canada, to the refineries in Texas. The oil companies are forced to use freight trains to transport their black gold. Expert’s estimate it would take daily runs of 15 trains with about 100 tank cars each to carry the amount planned by TransCanada. It would be a major increase in traffic from north to south. The number of carloads of crude oil doubled from 2010 to 2011, and then tripled from 2011 to 2012. If we don’t get our oil from Canada we will be forced to get it somewhere else. (TIME) Since July, plans have been announced for three large loading terminals in western Canada with the combined capacity of 350,000 barrels a day, about only 40% of the capacity of the proposed pipeline. Canada is poised to quadruple its rail-loading capacity over the next few years to as much as 900,000 barrels a day from 180,000. There have been a few rail way accidents and renewed concerns about the safety of transporting oil. If Canada builds new terminals it will increase its exports to the U. S by more than 90 percent. Right now they plan to ship 7,000 barrels a day to as many as 30,000 a day by the end of 2014. Oil companies will find any way they can to put their product on the market. (NYTIMES) When we think of oil, I think of why I am paying $3. 50 for a gallon of gas for my automobile. Some of the negative effects of pumping oil from a well are major spills that could possibly be devastating to an environment. There are many examples of these. For instance the BP spill in the gulf, there has been spills from hurricane Katrina, Michigan, and Arkansas. They do harm ecosystems. When there are spills they cause so many chain reactions. Environmentalists say it will create many greenhouse gasses. The EPA doesn’t want the project to go forward. Some argue in Nebraska that they don’t want the project to run near a major aquifer that supplies farmers with water for crops and livestock. Some say they’ve worked on pipelines and there is no such thing as a pipe that doesn’t leak. When millions of gallons of petroleum flow through a pipe it causes corrosion and after many years the pipe will leak as a result. The pipeline would run through the Ogalala Aquifer, which is the Midwest’s supply of water and lifeline. The carbon emissions from tar sands are more harmful than most other fossil fuels. The long them harm would not be worth the temporary jobs it would create. Political opinions say it would be a big step backwards. They say the only winner would be the oil companies and their money pockets. The Keystone XL pipeline project has the potential to reduce the amount of oil America imports from Venezuela, the Middle East and other regions by up to 40 percent. This will be oil that is produced in North America, by companies that employ thousands of American and Canadian citizens. The U.S consumes 15 million barrels of oil each day. About 60 percent of that oil must be imported from other countries. We need to get away from foreign oil and be more independent. There are many pros and cons of the Keystone XL pipeline. It would make more sense to approve it and build it rather than sit and wait. If the oil companies are going to move it to get refined why not see if what they are doing could have more benefits than tragedy’s. Cultural, Political and legal environment According to GSDP (2008, 1) there is a tension in Qatar between the new aspects of life and the old traditions that natives were used to culturally. Modern work patterns in Qatar crash with the traditions relationships based on trust and personal ties. This is more elaborate as the country becomes more open to globalization and more international business enters the country. Although there is a challenge of social patterns as GSDP (2008, 1) argues, there has been a positive embracing o f the globalization where the country is more receptive to international investors and this makes Qatar Airways a choice of many in the regional Asian market. The political class is seriously committed to improvement the business opportunities and conditions in Qatar. Due to globalization Qatar Airways has been able to expand to foreign markets such as in the US, Africa, Europe and the Asian market effectively.

This allegory is mainly centered on three characters. According to the writer, the dark brown dog, the father and the child are viewed as the main characters in the story. In most literary publications, the story mainly revolves around the characters. An overview of the story proves that the dark brown dog was mistreated by the family members (Crane, 2008). On the contrary, the dog did not respond violently to the household members even after receiving various forms of torture from the members of the household. In A Dark Brown Dog, the dog was treated inappropriately by the caregivers (Crane, 2008). The child of the household occasionally protected the dog from the harsh beatings. The child usually cried whenever his parents mistreated the dog. In one rare case, the father had struck his son’s head with a large saucepan after he had run toward s him protesting in order to protect the dog. From that point onwards, his parents reconsidered the issue of throwing items to the dog. Finally, the father of the household came home drunk. Afterwards, his son arrived home together with the dog. The father gave the dog a heavy beating and threw the dog outside the house through the window (Crane, 2008). The dog landed in a heap on top of the roof of a shed which was five stories below. The mood at the end of the story assumes that the dog had died after all the exploitation by the family members. In this literary work of fiction, the most prevalent theme is violence. According to the author, the dark brown dog faces violent actions from the members of the household (Collins, 2011). However, the dog was able to cope with the unjust beatings from the family. Further analysis also shows that on some occasions, the child who occasionally protected the dog imposed some form of torture to the dog. The author asserts that earlier on, the c hild thrashed the dog with a stick after he noticed that the dog was pursuing him. After he did this, the dog usually made funny gestures of apology to the child. According to the details contained in the story, the dog usually accepted the beatings from the family members (Collins, 2011). The child occasionally cried after the dog was smashed because the child loved the dog and even treated it like a close friend. The theme of violence in this short allegory has significant effects on the literary works. The child played the role of a close friend and a guardian to the dog (Magill, 1997). There are numerous literal elements that are contained in most short stories. Some of most common elements include the setting, characters, point of view, symbolism and plot. In this short story, the plot and the characters play an eminent role in the advancement of the subject matter of the story (Collins, 2011). As stated earlier, the father, child and the dog are considered the main characters. These characters employ all forms of violence to the helpless dog. Joanna Reeds diagnosis of the situation in his donor services department found many problems. LEADERSHIP The biggest problem was that there was no leader who was accountable. Elena was the supervisor but she had no control. She also had no leadership skills and did not get respect because she was not bilingual and of a different religion. The supposed leader, Jose, spent almost all his time in the community services department. He did not pay attention and left things up to Elena. INEFFICIENCY IN WORK The translators mostly did clerical work even though they were bilingual. The work in the office was divided into set tasks, one done by each person, and not divided evenly. Some workers had too much paperwork while the others had spare time. Those that had spare time did not help those loaded with work. There was also lack of training in English and in work, so quality was bad. The workers did not think about the job and used many extra steps and wasted time. TRACKING The data was not shared in the department, so people had little knowledge about their job. There were no statistics about time, requests for information, or responses. There was little communication, plus there was resentment of Elena by some. Jose did not hear about problems or about good results. MORALE The agency was run by a religion and Elena was not of that religion. However, everyone was proud of the agency and the religion. But morale was low because the workers did not use or improve their skills and had only a set and boring role to do. They are frustrated with the department. GROUP DYNAMICS One translator Magdalena had experience, college education, and maturity. She had strong belief in the agency and was more professional. Three translators socialized mostly, and their leader Juana was outgoing with good oral English. Other translators had too much work. Everyones English was only fair. Supervisor Elena was left out. Elena was treated like just a watchdog. Boss Jose was not around much and paid no attention. 2. What should she recommend to Sam Wilson? (HOW) Joanna might have made these suggestions: LEADERSHIP Magdalena might be a good supervisor instead of Elena. Magdalena had experience, education, belief in the agency, maturity, and professionalism. Magdalena could keep herself from making others dislike her by keeping a distance away from them. She could also have got respect. Juana could be given more leadership roles, to use her humor and outgoingness. Elena could do a job that required the hardest work. Jose could spend all his time in the community services department. INEFFICIENCY IN WORK The working strategy was changed to divide all the work more evenly, so all workers did all jobs. They could be less bored and learn more through such training. They could work in a team environment, rather than be selfish for themselves. Joannas identified unnecessary steps, which caused the system to be slow; could be changed to a better workflow. The workers could be asked to think more about improvements. The workers could be trained more in translating, perhaps they could translate easy documents or parts of documents. Socializing could be minimized to break times. TRACKING Statistics about time, requests for information, or responses could be kept and shared with all workers. Communication about problems or about good results would be increased through meetings, talks with leaders, and newsletters. MORALE All workers could know all jobs and be given a minimum of boring work, while improving skills. The religion should be emphasized along with service to others. The department could link with community services more. Communication should be encouraged. Togetherness as a team with an important purpose whould be emphasized. GROUP DYNAMICS The leader should be respected because of English languge ability and leadership skills and be of the right religion. Theleader should also be around all the time. The secondary leader should be a team worker and skillful in communication. The workers should respect each other and work as a team. All persons should have clear authority and responsibility. The workload should be fair. REWARDS Joanna could recommend rewards to change both the workers and the managers behavior. They could get a bonus for achieving goals. Where does it come from, are we born with it or do we make it happen? Happiness is but a belief, an idea, a theory; but theories, beliefs, and ideas have the possibility of being wrong. Can someone learn and choose to be happy? In this paradox it is hopeful to find some close truths about happiness and what is the need for this emotion. With our individ ual characteristics, patterns of thinking, feeling, and acting are we already born to be either happy or sad? What are the basic perspectives of the psychoanalytic and Humanistic nature for the people who make up this world who are always happy? Since the time of Aristotle his â€Å"telos†, or the end goal, was the same for all people, happiness. In Aristotle’s world, there are strongly knit groups where no strong distinction exists between public and private life. Everyone shares the same goals and values, so the pursuit of happiness is a cooperative initiative. That may have been the case back then, but in this day and time, not so much. Finding happiness and even defining happiness varies from person to person, between cultures and generations. There are times in everyone’s lives where decisions have to be made. Some decisions are small, some large and some life changing. Whatever type of decision you are faced with there is a process that is taken to determine the best possible outcome. In a personal aspect when I have a decision that needs to be made I tend to weigh all the possible outcomes and determine which one benefits me the most. For instance when I decided to go back to school at the University of phoenix I weighed the [possible outcomes of going back to school with the possible outcomes of not going back to school. Determining pros and cons is a typical weigh to reach an outcome when debating what to do in a scenario. I decided that the pros far outweighed the cons and I could potentially make a lot more money by going back to school in the long run than if I had decided not to re-enroll back into college. It is good for people to be able to see both sides of an outcome when making a very important decisio n in life. For the major decisions and choices people have to make it is essential they they be aware of the positive and the negatives of the potential outcome they choose. I have found that when a decision is to be made on very important issues I like to be able to play the â€Å"what if† game, the â€Å"what if† game is basically putting yourself into the different scenarios of the possible outcomes. For example, when I was debating on whether or not to return to school I put myself in the scenario of what if I don’t go back to school. That scenario would have played out with me being stuck in the same old dead end job and not making the effort to change my future for the better. When I put myself in the scenario where I went back to school I could see myself graduating, getting a good job and living a more prosperous life. In concluding the decision making process is one that helps people make real life decisions in real life situations. Some people use diff erent methods to help them figure out which decision is best for them. The majority of the time it pays to weigh your options and look ahead to what the potential of each decision could be.
